UM Health Plan, Michigan Care to end after 2025

Topics:

Michigan Medicine will discontinue the UM Health Plan and the Michigan Care and Michigan Care Advantage plans it operates, effective at the end of 2025, allowing U-M Health to focus resources on direct patient care, education and research.

Michigan Medicine is the majority owner of the UM Health Plan — formerly Physicians Health Plan or PHP — which operates the Michigan Care and Michigan Care Advantage plans. The university will continue to offer other comprehensive health insurance plans to benefits-eligible faculty, staff and retirees.

The move does not affect current Michigan Care benefits or benefits for the 2025 plan year. Member coverage will continue uninterrupted through 2025, and all claims for services provided through Dec. 31, 2025, will be processed by the plan.

Current members will be able to choose another University of Michigan health insurance plan during the next Open Enrollment period in October 2025 for coverage that will be effective on Jan. 1, 2026.

The plan will directly notify Michigan Care and Michigan Care Advantage members later in 2025 before the plan is discontinued.

Those with additional questions should contact the UM Health Plan’s Customer Service team at 800-832-9186, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
