U-M unveils enhancements, support for working remotely

Topics:

The University of Michigan has launched new system enhancements and resources for remote and hybrid work through Ways We Work, an initiative that also established modes of work.

The enhancements include centralized work data and more detailed job postings along with resources to help units strengthen their workplace practices.

The Remote Work Collection System is a major enhancement that integrates the collection of remote-work-arrangement data into Employee Self Service within Wolverine Access, the university’s online portal for accessing services and employee information. Faculty and staff may have different obligations for entering information into the system.

Having this information located centrally for the entire university enables the university to make more informed decisions about human resources policies, workplace practices, office space needs and resource allocation.

These latest developments build on the university’s support for an inclusive and well-supported work environment for employees across all campuses and Michigan Medicine. The new features are designed to be intuitive and user-friendly, enabling everyone to easily adapt and benefit from the Remote Work Collection System.

Additionally, at least one of the university’s three work modes will be included in each university job posting on the U-M Careers website at careers.umich.edu. Having this information will help current and potential employees make informed decisions when evaluating employment opportunities at the university. The job posting system has been updated to require a work mode.

University Human Resources and Information and Technology Services partnered to design these system changes with input from UM-Dearborn, UM-Flint and Michigan Medicine to ensure consistency across the university community.

The new Remote Work Collection System is functional now in Wolverine Access’ Employee Self Service section, and campus units will determine their own timeframe for entering required information before Dec. 31.

The system will be used by the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses, as well as Michigan Medicine. Leadership for each campus will inform employees when to enter remote-work arrangements and provide the resources to help with a smooth transition for entering data in the new system.

The Practical Guide to Implementing the Ways We Work Guiding Principles is available online for unit leaders on the Ann Arbor campus and is intended to provide a consistent framework for decision-making about work practices and work modes.

An Interim Policy on Domestic and International Remote Work Standard Practice Guide, available online at spg.umich.edu/policy/201.05-01, outlines current work practices.
