University Library launches new online service

The University Library’s new document linking service, SFX, is now available. The first component of the yearlong implementation of a new library management system, the SFX tool creates shortcuts to the full text of online articles and books, as well as links to other library services.

When searching in many of the University Library databases or other online resources, users will see the SFX button (see graphic) or link that connects them to a menu of options.

An abbreviation for “special effects,” SFX will allow researchers to move more easily from citation to full text in the library’s electronic collections or to document delivery services.

“We believe this is a powerful tool for linking and integrating scholarly information, that will expand and develop as new resources are added,” says Barbara MacAdam, chair of the library management system steering committee overseeing the implementation process.

SFX is available to all users and guests on the University’s Ann Arbor and Flint campuses, and to current students, faculty and staff at U-M-Ann Arbor and U-M-Flint from off-campus as well. More information about the service is at http://www.lib.umich.edu/help/sfx .

When completed in June 2004, the new library online system will replace the existing one implemented in 1987, and consolidate access to a wide range of content and services through the Michigan Research Library Network (MIRLYN).
