The University of Michigan is the top public university in the United States and one of the best higher education institutions in the world, according to the QS World University Rankings 2023 edition released June 8.

U-M maintained its No. 1 place among U.S. public universities for the seventh consecutive year.

It ranked 25th overall out of 1,422 institutions, a drop of two spots from last year.

The QS World University Rankings are based on six factors: academic reputation (40 percent), employer reputation (10 percent), faculty-student ratio (20 percent), citations per faculty (20 percent), proportion of international faculty (5 percent) and proportion of international students (5 percent).

U-M was one of two U.S. public universities to make the top 30. The University of California, Berkeley was ranked No. 27.

The rankings list has been published annually since 2004. With more than 1,400 institutions, the 2023 list was the largest one ever. Next year, two new factors will be incorporated into the rankings: employment outcomes and participation in international research networks.
