The Board of Regents has announced the appointment of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee, the next step in the process to select the University of Michigan’s next president.
The 13 appointees — a mix of faculty, staff, students and alumni — were introduced in an email message from the regents to the university community Aug. 11.

“The committee’s insight, experience, and commitment will be instrumental as we move forward in this historic process,” the email said.
The committee works with regents and the executive search firm, Spencer Stuart, to identify and review candidates and make recommendations for the full Board of Regents’ consideration. The co-chairs of the committee are Regents Mark Bernstein and Mike Behm.
In addition to the eight-member Board of Regents, the committee members include:
- Ruth Behar, James W. Fernandez Distinguished University Professor of Anthropology, LSA.
- Rima Berry-Hung, senior human resources director and senior adviser to the chancellor, UM-Dearborn.
- Jeff T. Blau, CEO, Related Companies, and U-M alumnus.
- Roger D. Cone, Tadataka Yamada Distinguished University Professor of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, Mary Sue Coleman Director of the Life Sciences Institute, Research Professor, Life Sciences Institute, and professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, LSA; and professor of molecular and integrative physiology, Medical School.
- Stephen R. Forrest, Peter A. Franken Distinguished University Professor of Engineering, Paul G. Goebel Professor of Engineering, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and of material science and engineering, College of Engineering; and professor of physics, LSA.
- Julie K. Ishak, chief nurse executive, U-M Health.
- Gregory A. Laurence, professor of management, and chair, Department of Management and Marketing, School of Management, UM-Flint.
- Kyle D. Logue, Douglas A. Kahn Collegiate Professor and professor of law, Law School.
- Ganesh S. Palapattu, George F. and Sandra G. Valassis Professor of Urology, and chair, Department of Urology, Medical School.
- Angelica Previero, president, Rackham Student Government; graduate student, LSA, and Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies
- Karen E. Smith, William Fulton Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics, and chair, Department of Mathematics, LSA.
- Eric Veal Jr., president, Central Student Government, undergraduate student, LSA, and Marsal Family School of Education
- Celeste M. Watkins-Hayes, Joan and Sanford Weill Dean of Public Policy, Jean E. Fairfax Collegiate Professor of Public Policy, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy; and professor of sociology (by courtesy), LSA.
The university also has launched a Presidential Search website that will include up-to-date information, announcements and engagement opportunities.
Over the coming weeks, the committee will engage with university stakeholders and advise regents on the competencies and leadership qualities recommended in the next president. A series of community listening sessions will take place for community members to share input.
