Unarmed robbery reported outside Hatcher Library

A student told police he was assaulted by two unknown men who also attempted to rob him around 1:40 a.m. Dec. 7. The victim said he had been walking under the south overhang of the Hatcher Graduate Library, when two unknown men approached him.  One man reportedly punched the victim in the head, knocking him down. The victim said he also was kicked twice. One subject began searching the victim’s pockets, but both suspects fled west toward State Street when other people approached. No property was taken. The victim did not seek medical assistance.

One suspect was described as a black male, 6 feet to 6 feet 3 inches, 35 to 40 years old, with a goatee and wearing a black hoodie pulled over his head and a blue neck warmer. No additional description was available for the second man.

Sexual assault investigation closed

A student reported Nov. 21 that she was assaulted by another student in the Kraus Building. The complainant told university police that as she was leaving the auditorium around 3:45 p.m., she spoke to a male she thought was a student in her class. The man then pushed her against the wall, tried to kiss her and inappropriately grabbed her. She reportedly punched him and fled.  The police investigators were unable to identify a suspect and the case has been closed due to no additional leads.

Dispute at Michigan Stadium results in injuries

A dispute over peanuts toward the end of the Nov. 9 U-M versus Nebraska football game resulted in two men sustaining injuries that required medical attention. The incident began when a 24-year-old man reportedly took a bag of peanuts that had been left unattended by two other patrons. When the peanut owners returned to their seats, a physical altercation ensued between the two men and other subjects in the area. Witness and participant accounts about the incident differed.

Due to the severity of the victims’ injuries, the investigation was submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of aggravated assault charges against the 66-year-old peanut owner. However, the prosecutor declined to authorize assault charges (due to differing accounts of the assaults) or larceny charges (due to uncertainty whether the property had been abandoned) and the case has been closed.

Property taken from unsecured residence

Cash, headphones, a calculator and other personal property reportedly were taken from an unsecured Bursley Hall room. The two residents were away from the room between 5:30 a.m. Nov. 27 and noon Nov. 28, and reported that the door probably wasn’t fully closed when they left. There are no suspects in the burglary.

Student driver abandoned bus route

An unoccupied U-M bus was found parked near south campus with the engine running. Reportedly the bus had been parked near Arch and White streets for more than two hours after 11 p.m. Nov. 1. Shortly after university police arrived at the scene, the student driver arrived on foot. The 22-year-old man was arrested for unlawful driving away of an automobile. He was processed and released pending warrant authorization. The prosecutor declined to authorize arrest charges. The student no longer is employed by the university.
