Rewards offered

A reward up to $500 is being offered in connection with two recent campus crimes — a sexual assault in Northwood Community Apartments and property destruction at the Central Power Plant.

On Aug. 3 university police were notified by a Northwood IV resident parent that a young child had been inappropriately touched by an unknown man while playing outside in the 1300 block of McIntyre. A sibling also was involved in the incident but was not touched. Both children are younger than 6 years old. The man reportedly appeared to be a maintenance worker and was carrying tools. He was described as a dark-skinned, bald man with a thin moustache and muscular build. He last was seen wearing a light blue shirt, worn jeans shorts and black tennis shoes. He also may have a tattoo.

On July 16 an employee of a contracted company working on a project at the Central Power Plant reported that his safety harness had been cut while he was taking a break. The man told university police he had been wearing the harness while he was lowering pipe into the building’s basement. When he took a break between 9:30-9:50 a.m., he removed the harness. When he returned to the area, he observed several cuts in the harness strap.

Anyone with information about either of these incidents is asked to contact the university’s Anonymous Tip Line at 800-863-1355 or the Department of Public Safety at 734-763-1131 or e-mail public.safety@umich.edu.

Post-game fight remains under investigation

Two players from a youth baseball team sought medical treatment after sustaining injuries during a fight following a July 3 game at Fisher Stadium. The fight, involving many players, coaches and parents from the two out-of-town teams, erupted during the post-game “handshake line.” The police investigation is continuing.

Property stolen from SQ room recovered

An iPod that reportedly had been stolen from an unattended South Quad room July 14 was recovered July 30 when police interviewed a suspect in other recent campus larcenies. The iPod owner and the suspect had been staying in South Quad while attending a sports camp. The results of the burglary and larceny investigations have been submitted to the juvenile court officials in the suspect’s home county for review.
