Two vehicles stolen, no suspects

Two vehicle owners reported to DPS that their vehicles had been stolen from South Campus parking lots in April. On April 21, a contractor with the School of Music, Theatre & Dance reported that between 7:10 p.m.-10:10 p.m. his 1994 Chevrolet Blazer had been taken from the lot near Revelli Hall. He indicated the vehicle doors had been locked. There was no evidence of broken glass in the lot.

On April 26 a staff person who works at Wolverine Tower told police that her 1999 Honda Civic had been taken sometime during the day. She said the vehicle doors were locked. There was no evidence of broken glass in the lot.

Burglary suspect apprehended

Minutes after a West Quad resident told police that a cell phone and earphones had been taken from an occupied room, police identified a suspect a few blocks away. About 4:30 p.m. April 5, a resident gave police a description of a suspect in the burglary. A responding officer observed a suspect matching the description nearby with a group of other young men. After stopping the 19-year-old man, a second man approached and told police that he had taken the phone. The phone was located nearby and the earphones were found in the second man’s possession. A 17-year-old non-affiliate was taken into custody for the burglary. He faces additional charges as he subsequently refused to be fingerprinted. The first man was released.

Case dismissed in sexual assault case

The prosecutor’s office dismissed a sexual assault case in early May because the two victims did not appear for the preliminary hearing. An 18-year-old Ypsilanti man had been charged in connection with two sexual assaults that were reported to have occurred April 25 in a Mary Markley Hall room. Police were told that the man and a friend, neither of whom is affiliated with the university, were visiting two female students and listening to music in a darkened room. Allegedly the suspect began assaulting one of the women, who broke free and fled the room. When the second man followed her out of the room, the suspect reportedly assaulted the second woman. The women were examined at the University Hospital and released.

Four sexual assaults reported on medical campus

Four separate reports were filed with DPS in April for sexual assaults in medical campus buildings. In all four incidents, the suspect was known or later identified.

On April 1 a patient’s mother told police that she thought her daughter had been assaulted by a doctor during a medical exam at the Comprehensive Cancer Center. The daughter previously had been treated by the doctor with no reports of unusual behavior. The investigation is continuing.

A nurse reported on April 8 that a 57-year-old patient inappropriately grabbed her while she was helping him move in a hospital bed at University Hospital. She did not sustain physical injuries during the incident. The investigation has been submitted to the prosecutor’s office for review.

A Cancer Center staff person reported April 16 that a 73-year-old visitor had inappropriately touched and kissed her. She did not sustain physical injuries during the incident. The investigation has been submitted to the prosecutor’s office for review.

On April 24 a nurse in the University Hospital Emergency Department reported that she had been inappropriately grabbed by a patient. She did not sustain physical injuries during the incident. The investigation continues.

Laptop taken from unattended room

A laptop computer was reported stolen from a room at Alice Lloyd Hall April 28 or 29. The owner told police he had left his room unattended from 8 p.m. April 28 until about 2 a.m. April 29. His resident adviser had called him at 2 a.m. to inform him that she had observed his door open and the lights off, so she shut the door. When the resident returned to his room, he discovered that his computer was missing.

Student questioned for trash can fire

A resident of Couzens Hall was questioned in late April in connection with an intentional fire April 21 in a trash can outside the residence hall. The fire had been extinguished by a housing security officer without incident. Through interviews, it was determined that he was not connected with any of the off-campus suspicious fires that were reported in recent months.

Glass door broken at Crisler Arena

A shattered, exterior glass door to the television production studio at Crisler Arena was discovered April 25 when employees arrived for work. Evidence of other vandalism was observed, but nothing was reported to be stolen.

Assault victim treated at Emergency Department

A 43-year-old man visited the University Hospital Emergency Department April 10 to seek treatment for facial injuries he sustained in a fight. The man told police that he regularly slept under the Medical Center Drive bridge near the hospital. Earlier in the afternoon, he said another man began punching the victim in the face and head during a dispute about a third person. At one point, the suspect reportedly also struck the victim with a rock. The victim was treated and released.
