Information and Technology Services has made a series of enhancements to the first-of-their-kind generative artificial intelligence tools that the University of Michigan debuted last year.
The recent upgrades include making the popular AI image generator DALL-E 3 and the newly updated GPT 4.0 Turbo available via U-M GPT to all U-M students, faculty and staff. Both tools are now integrated into U-M GPT and are accessible by the dropdown menu on its homepage.

DALL-E 3 is a powerful text-to-image generator that allows users to create detailed images by simply typing in a detailed description. GPT 4.0 Turbo is the same large language model that currently powers ChatGPT.
While GPT 3.5 was trained on data that was only current until January 2022, GPT 4.0 Turbo has updated access to data that is now current up to April 2023.
The university also will continue offering no-cost access to its U-M Maizey service through May 2024. Maizey empowers users to train a custom AI GPT on their own data and then share that tool with others in the U-M community.
There are more than 750 active Maizey projects in development and production at U-M at the moment, including AI tutors for Stephen M. Ross School of Business classes and LSA’s new Maizey AI Advising tool.
“The fact that these tools exist and have remained available at no cost to our campus community is due to the vision and support of President Ono, Provost McCauley, and our university leadership,” said Ravi Pendse, vice president of information technology and chief information officer.
