UMCI groundbreaking

The U-M Center for Innovation in Detroit broke ground Dec. 14 in a ceremony featuring leaders of the partners bringing the project to fruition. The $250 million center in downtown Detroit is designed to be a world-class research, education and entrepreneurship center to advance innovation and talent-focused community development. Well-being and mental health

In his December video message, President Santa J. Ono encouraged members of the U-M community to take time to assess their well-being and mental health. Ono highlighted LSA’s optiMize, which offers special wellness programming to support students. In this month’s Portrait of a Wolverine, Ono recognized Chief Health Officer Robert Ernst for his work with the Well-being Collective, help establishing a public health response team and other support for a healthy U-M community.

Adaptive Sports and Inclusive Recreation Initiative

U-M’s Adaptive Sports & Fitness program aims to provide equitable access to and participation in adaptive sports and fitness among people with and without disabilities in the Ann Arbor community. This video explains how the Adaptive Sports and Inclusive Recreation Initiative, funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, embeds an adaptive sports curriculum into the physical education programming at middle schools. It recently received an additional grant of about $650,000 from Michigan Medicine to expand the program from sixth grade to seventh and eighth, and into Ypsilanti public schools as well as Ann Arbor.

Trail dedication

In a surprise ceremony last month on former associate director Mark Paddock’s 95th birthday, the U-M Biological Station officially dedicated the Mark and Ruth Paddock Trail at Carp Creek Gorge. Paddock served as associate director at UMBS from 1971-91 and after retirement remained involved with local conservation efforts. This video explains what the gorge is and Paddock’s impact on the UMBS, as well as footage of the dedication ceremony.

Freeing the wrongly accused

Legal experts estimate the national rate of individuals wrongly convicted of crimes is between 3% to 5%. Since 2009, the U-M Law School Innocence Clinic has been dedicated to correcting injustices inflicted upon Michigan residents. More than 6,500 inmates have contacted the clinic, run by Michigan Law students, for legal help in the last 14 years. As of November 2023, they have helped 41 people gain their freedom back and start new lives. This video explores the impact the clinic has had since its inception.

2024 MLK Symposium

The theme of the 2024 MLK Symposium is “Transforming the Jangling Discords of Our Nation into a Beautiful Symphony.” Recalling a line from the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech, statement encapsulates a profound vision of unity, peace and reconciliation in the face of discord and division. Michelle Alexander, legal scholar, social justice advocate, columnist at The New York Times and visiting professor at Union Theological Seminary, will deliver the symposium’s memorial keynote lecture at 10 a.m. Jan. 15, 2024, at Hill Auditorium.

Composting game day waste

Compost from U-M football games could be used to grow produce at the student-run Campus Farm, if a recent experiment goes well. This approach to managing the Michigan Stadium waste stream would capture valuable nutrients for the Campus Farm and provide experiential learning and research opportunities. In this video, participants in the pilot project discuss how it works and its potential benefits.

Automated vehicle testing

A driverless May Mobility vehicle stops automatically to let a simulated passerby cross the street during the first day of testing to support the city of Detroit’s Automated Driving Systems shuttle. Testing of a new automated shuttle is underway at U-M’s Mcity Test Facility to ensure the technology is ready to safely serve older adults and people with disabilities in Detroit.
