Munger dedication

The university Wednesday marked the dedication of the new Munger Graduate Residences with a ceremony that included the unveiling of a special MCard for U-M alumnus Charles T. Munger, whose $110 million gift funded the residence hall construction and fellowships for graduate students. Cattail harvest

A team of researchers based at the U-M Biological Station is using a $500,000 federal grant to test a novel approach for restoring the biological diversity of Great Lakes coastal wetlands. In this video, researchers explain their work to remove 10-15 tons of cattails from Cheboygan Marsh, at the northernmost tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Removing the cattails stimulates the growth of native plants whose seeds have been dormant for 50 years or more.

A different health insurance model

Value-Based Insurance Design, a health insurance model designed to improve care and cut costs that grew out of work at U-M, will be tested in seven states through the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. In this video, Dr. Mark Fendrick, director of the Center for Value-Based Insurance Design, based in the School of Public Health and the Medical School, discusses how the model came about.

Dead zone boat

Researchers at U-M are developing an autonomous unmanned vehicle that has temperature sensors to define hypoxic or dissolved oxygen areas in Michigan’s smaller lakes. In this video, Branko Kerkez, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Brandon Wong, a graduate student research assistant, discuss how the vessel works and how eventually it could be scaled up to take readings inside Lake Erie, an area with a history of hypoxic problems.

Interprofessional education

Educators from U-M’s seven health science schools shared innovations and best practices recently during the first Health Professions Education Day. Canvas experience

More than 130 courses, with 150 instructors and 10,000 students, were involved in a one-year pilot of the Canvas learning management system, which has been chosen to replace CTools. Evaluations showed 74 percent of faculty respondents prefer Canvas to CTools, while 18 percent are neutral. In this video, several faculty members discuss their experience with the new system.

Coffee killer

A fungus called coffee rust is ravaging farms in Mexico and Central America. John Vandermeer, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, and natural resources and environment, and Ivette Perfecto, professor of natural resources and environment, are studying how the fungus spreads through fields. In this video, they and some of the graduate students who joined them on a research trip this summer discuss their work that could save coffee.

Saving lives at 2,000 feet

Elaine Philipson says she was afraid of heights before she became a Survival Flight Nurse at the U-M Health System. Now she works in jets and helicopters daily, helping patients while flying through the air at 160 miles per hour. She discusses her work in this video.

Hailing a new Nursing building

The university formally opened the School of Nursing’s new building Friday, with a ribbon cutting and open house. The technology-rich facility has hybrid classrooms that allow faculty to lead traditional classes but also transform the spaces for collaboration and active learning in groups at digital media stations. EarthFest

The sun was shining and the weather was perfect for bubbles Thursday as U-M celebrated EarthFest, its annual “party for the planet” celebrating campus sustainability efforts.
