Authors Michael Hofmann, Maurice Kilwein Guevara, Jon Manchip White and Michael Martone will present their works in the Visiting Writers Series during October.
Sponsored by the Department of English and Borders Books and Music, the series features readings of fiction and poetry by more than two dozen writers throughout the academic year. Most readings are free to the public.
The free October readings, held at the Rackham Building Amphitheater, include:
Oct. 4 (4 p.m.): Michael Hofmann, a free-lance writer, translator and reviewer, has written four books of poems, including and Corona, Corona, and has translated two novels, The Film Explainer by his late father, Gert Hofmann, and The Man Who Disappeared by Franz Kafka.
Oct. 6 (5 p.m.): Poet Maurice Kilwein Guevara, who teaches U.S. Latina/Latino and post-modern literature at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, published his first collection of poems, Post-mortem, this year and is working on his second, Poems of the River Spirit. His reading is co-sponsored by Latina/Latino Studies.
Oct. 11 (4 p.m.): Welsh author Jon Manchip White, whose literary career has spanned more than 50 years, has written 30 books of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. His reading is co-sponsored by the Institute for the Humanities.
Oct. 20 (5 p.m.): Writer Michael Martone, an English professor at Syracuse University, has written four books of fiction, Pensees: The Thoughts of Dan Quayle, Fort Wayne is Seventh on Hitler’s List, Safety Patrol and Alive and Dead in Indiana.
Oct. 27 (5 p.m. in the Michigan Union Kuenzel Room): Poetry reading to be announced.
