University launches centralized research security webpage

As one of the world’s leading research institutions, the University of Michigan prioritizes the integrity and security of its research operations, while supporting the students, faculty and staff who drive innovation and discovery for the benefit of society.

In a message to the university community July 2, President Domenico Grasso underscored these priorities and introduced a centralized webpage with clear, concise information on research security policies, compliance training, laboratory safety protocols and other resources

“Our research enterprise is dynamic, and our safety and security procedures must be equally vigorous,” Grasso said.

He stressed the “profound shared responsibility—to our campus, our research partners, and the public—to safeguard the integrity of our work” and emphasized the importance of “upholding the highest standards of safety, compliance, and research security.”

Grasso’s message comes as the university reviews policies following news of evolving threats to Michigan and other research universities.

“We will fully comply with all applicable laws and regulations and take all necessary actions to safeguard our people, our research and our nation,” Grasso said. “We are equally dedicated to supporting international scholars and students who bring critical global perspectives to our classrooms and laboratories, thereby enriching our broader community.”

The new webpage offers information on several topics:

  • Research Security – covering export control compliance, foreign engagement policies, research security information, controlled substances and outside activity disclosure.
  • Employee Training – covering research security training, safety training, export control training and transportation and importation training.
  • Research Safety – covering biosafety use approval, visitor and volunteer protocols and other health and safety oversight and compliance.
  • Reporting Noncompliance – covering compliance hotline and safety incident reporting.

“I am tremendously proud of the legacy, impact and potential of our research enterprise and all those who contribute to it,” Grasso said. “We all share responsibility for advancing and protecting this critical portfolio. Together, we will lead with the purpose, integrity, and excellence that define the University of Michigan.”

This is excellent but it should have been in place all along. How are residents going to know that these guidelines are actually being followed?
