Units schedule commencement events; 7 to receive honorary degrees

Detroit Mayor Dennis W. Archer will deliver the commencement address at the University Graduate Exercises at 9:30 a.m. April 30 in Hill Auditorium. Opening remarks will be made by President James. J. Duderstadt.

Honorary degree recipients, in addition to Archer, will be: David Broder, Pulitzer-Prize winning columnist for the Washington Post; Father William T. Cunningham, founder of Focus: HOPE, a civil and human rights organization in Detroit; Charles T. Fisher III, past chairman and president of NBD Bancorp and NBD Bank; Eleanor M. Josaitis, associate director of Focus: HOPE; L. William Seidman, chief commentator for the Consumer News Business Channel and former business executive; and Horace L. Sheffield Jr., former civil rights and trade union leader.

A reception follows on the second floor of the Rackham Building.

The following unit commencement ceremonies also are scheduled:

  • Architecture and Urban Planning, noon, April 30, Power Center for the Performing Arts. Reception follows in courtyard of Art and Architecture Building, North Campus.

  • School of Art, 2 p.m. April 30, Rackham Auditorium. Speaker Francoise Gilot, painter, writer, designer and illustrator. In conjunction with her visit, the school has an exhibition of her paintings on display April 29–June 18 in the Slusser Gallery.

  • School of Education, 3:30 p.m. April 30, Hill Auditorium. Reception follows at Alumni Center. Speaker: Columbia University Prof. Linda Darlin-Hammond.

  • College of Engineering, 5 p.m. April 30, Crisler Arena. Speaker: Father William T. Cunningham, founder and executive director of Focus: HOPE.

  • School of Information and Library Studies. Degree candidates will be honored at Graduate Exercises. Reception scheduled 11 a.m.–1 p.m., Erlicher Room, 411 West Engineering Building.

  • Division of Kinesiology, 7:30 p.m., Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, Michigan League. Reception follows in League Ballroom. Speaker: Robert Forman, director of the Alumni Association, on “The Pursuit of Happiness.”

  • School of Natural Resources and Environment, 5 p.m. April 30, Rackham Auditorium. Speaker: Kenneth J. Polakowski, professor of landscape architecture. In addition, the School will honor Lyle E. Crain, professor emeritus of natural resources, who died last spring.
