The UM-Flint College of Innovation & Technology has received approval from the Board of Regents to establish three distinct academic divisions.
The restructuring comes after careful deliberation among CIT Dean Christopher Pearson and various faculty members about how to better organize the school’s administrative needs.

Launched in fall 2021, CIT was founded to bridge a gap between the vocational technical training offered by community colleges and the science-based bachelor’s degree programs traditionally available in engineering and computer science.
The newly restructured CIT will continue this mission with three divisions and 12 departments, including:
- Division of Computing, which includes the departments of computer science, cybersecurity and software engineering.
- Division of Engineering and Technology, which includes the departments of applied and engineering physics, mechanical engineering, smart manufacturing, electrical and computer engineering, and technology.
- Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, which includes the departments of biology, green chemistry and biochemistry, geospatial science, and mathematics.
“This new administrative structure will empower our faculty members to continue to lead through the development and implementation of new academic programs, innovative cocurricular experiences and world-class research,” Pearson said.
“We also expect to see significant advantages in recruiting faculty and students and attracting significant external research support.”
CIT faculty members proposed and endorsed the department names and structure, which will take effect Dec. 31.
