The funds donated will benefit programs and services through the United Way of Washtenaw County Community Impact Fund. This fund aims to meet the most pressing needs in the community or within organizations designated by the donor.

The 2021 campaign’s final tally exceeded the goal of $1 million that it had announced in October.

Campaign co-chairs Alfreda Rooks, director of Community Health Services at U-M Health, and Chris Kolb, vice president for government relations, acknowledged the university community’s generous support of the campaign.

“I want to thank the employees of the University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine for supporting the campaign,” Rooks said. “Our community will be a stronger and better place because of your generosity.”

To initiate the 2021 campaign, the co-chairs invited the university community to do more for children, families and seniors in need in Washtenaw County with a pledge to the United Way.

“The university answered the call to support our community,” Kolb said. “The success of the campaign ensures nonprofits in our area will be able to provide the support needed to help this county’s most vulnerable citizens.”

Pam Smith, president and CEO of United Way of Washtenaw County, also expressed appreciation to the U-M community.

“The University of Michigan and United Way is a partnership that works for the community,” Smith said. “We are able to provide a safety net of support for our community in part because of the gifts from U-M faculty, staff and employees. On behalf of my board of directors and staff, thank you to everyone for helping Washtenaw County thrive.”

U-M United Way campaign organizers offered special thanks to the more than 100 unit volunteers around the university who participated in and gave their support to the campaign.

While the formal campaign has ended, the U-M United Way campaign office is still accepting pledges. To donate, call 734-763-3109.
