The University of Michigan was ranked as the top U.S. public university in the latest QS World University Rankings for 2016, moving ahead of the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, Los Angeles.

U-M ranked 23rd overall among more than 900 colleges and universities in the world, up seven spots from last year. The ranking was released Tuesday.

The QS World University Rankings, launched in 2004, are based on six factors: academic reputation, employer reputation, student-faculty ratio, citations per faculty, proportion of international faculty and proportion of international students.

The United States had the most universities of any nation on the list, accounting for almost a third of the top 100 positions in the ranking.

Great news. My wife and I were there in the 60s, and our daughter in the 90s; all of us have wonderful memories of Ann Arbor.

Although I earned my freshman letter in football (’48), I always looked at the University as a place to learn and grown — on my way through two of the very top Ivy League schools. All were excellent learning and social environments.

But I have always been bothered by the “Go Blue” slogan. Yes, we were national champions in ’48 but that was not something to wallow in.

Go Learning, Go Grow — but NOT Go Blue.

    That is so juvenile.

My dad, who was psychology prof at Uof M from ’48-’78, was in Japan giving a lecture years ago when someone in the audience, in a heavy Japanese accent, hollered “Go Blue”. My dad remembered it as a wonderful connecting moment.

Liked the comment by my Uncle Larry. What I think Mr. Vass meant to say was “Once upon a time, I spent nine wonderful years at UofM.”

Now if they could just be number one in football!
My father graduated from law school in 1936, and I did my Internal Medicine Residency ending in 1973.
