To prepare for increased traffic from new and returning students, the University and City of Ann Arbor Move-in Task Force have set the main move-in days for Aug. 26-29.
Working in conjunction with the City of Ann Arbor, University Housing has established move-in plans that will ease traffic congestion on and around campus, and will help to reduce traffic delays. Each student has been assigned a specific day to move in to help distribute the number of arrivals per day more evenly and to allow more efficient traffic control in specific areas.
Street closures
To further ease circulation, a number of streets on or near the U-M campus will have non-standard traffic flow beginning Aug. 27, and continuing through Aug. 29. These streets will have barricades at both ends, with security and police personnel directing traffic to residence halls and unloading zones.
The affected streets are:
• Madison, closed between Division and Thompson
• Thompson, from East Jefferson to Packard
• Monroe, from State to end of cul-de-sac
• Observatory, from East Ann to Geddes (southbound traffic only)
• East Ann, from Observatory to Zina Pitcher Place (eastbound only)
• Other affected streets may include the following: Jefferson, Maynard, East University, Willard and Church
Although regular city traffic may be permitted along barricaded streets, there will be only one travel lane on each.
Commuting hours
University faculty and staff are encouraged to travel to and from work before 9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m., and to avoid driving in residence hall areas when possible. Those who cannot find alternate routes, however, will find officers from University Housing Security, the Department of Public Safety and the Ann Arbor Police Department stationed at entry points near main intersections, where they’ll assist in keeping traffic moving and directing students to unloading spaces by each hall.
Parking lot closures and restrictions during Aug. 27 – 29 also will affect a small portion of the University community:
• Bursley Hall Parking Lot (NC31), several parking spaces will be controlled
• Maynard Street lot W-5 will be reserved for students moving in
• Richard Kennedy Drive, parallel parking spaces for U-M service vehicles will be closed
• Lot W16 (the “Triangle Lot”), located at Thompson, Packard and Madison, will be closed to all permit parkers
• Lot W18, located next to Parking Services and the Thompson Street Parking Structure, will be closed
• Thompson Street (W3) and Palmer Drive (N26) parking structures will be used for overflow parking. The structure gates will be opened at 10 a.m. for the remainder of the day. At the Thompson Parking Structure, all traffic will be directed to exit via the Division Street exit.
• Lot M28, located on Washington Heights across from Markley Hall, will be closed to all permit parkers.
Special student permits
Students who are moving in will have customized unloading permits, which will allow them to park near their residence hall for 30 minutes and also in the Palmer Structure on a short-term basis.
On hand at residence halls will be Move-in Makers, student volunteers who welcome parents and students, answer their questions and help them unload their vehicles.
