Safety in all academic and research endeavors is a core institutional value at the University of Michigan.
To recognize the efforts taken by staff and leaders to support this important mission, the Research and Academic Safety Committee has launched the Excellence in Research Safety Awards.
More information
The awards will be given in two categories: Excellence in Research Safety and Excellence in Innovation. Nominations are due by April 11. Eligibility is limited to Ann Arbor campus research and academic areas inspected by Environment, Health & Safety, which excludes Michigan Medicine.
Awards will be given to one principal investigator, faculty lead or supervisor, and one research support staff member, who exemplify what it means to put safety first every day.
Nominees should demonstrate a strong concern for safety and dedication to promoting a culture of safety within their area of responsibility, or lead innovations in their research or creative practice area that make processes simpler to execute while maintaining the highest standards of safety.
Awardees will receive a $500 honorarium and be formally recognized during the Annual Safety Summit conducted by the Research and Academic Safety Committee on May 20.
The awards are sponsored by the Research Safety First Initiative, which launched in 2022 as a new phase in the partnership between U-M, the Research and Academic Safety Committee, and Environment, Health & Safety.
It is designed to support U-M researchers by reducing burden while also increasing adherence to research safety requirements, based on feedback from laboratory directors, unit safety committees and others.
