Ada Sue Hinshaw, director of the National Institute for Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will be recommended to the Board of Regents at their January meeting as dean of the School of Nursing. Her appointment would be for a five-year term, effective July 1, 1994.
In announcing the recommendation, Provost Gilbert R. Whitaker Jr. noted that Hinshaw’s “reputation for her teaching, research and administrative skills is outstanding.”
He added that the recommendation follows a national search “during which a number of outstanding candidates were identified and considered. I am delighted that Dr. Hinshaw has made the decision to come to Michigan and am confident that she will serve as an excellent representative of the School of Nursing.”
Hinshaw, who joined NIH in 1987, holds degrees from the University of Kansas, Yale University and the Uni-versity of Arizona. Her research has focused on clinical nursing and nursing administration, theory construction and testing, instrument development and testing, and field designs and issues. Her clinical major was in maternal-newborn health.
Many of Hinshaw’s recent nursing activities have centered at the national level. She is credited with moving the National Center for Nursing Research to the National Institute for Nursing Research in the NIH in 1993. She serves on the Health Professions’ Working Group on Minority Health, the Department of Health and Human Services Council on Alzheimer’s Disease, and the Task Force on Aging Research, National Institute of Aging, NIH.
Prior to joining the NIH, Hinshaw held faculty and administrative posts at the University of Arizona; the University Medical Center in Tucson; University of California, San Francisco; and the University of Kansas.
She has been awarded honorary degrees by the University of Maryland, Medical College of Ohio, Marquette University, University of Nebraska and Mount Sinai Medical Center School of Medicine, New York.
In addition, she has received an Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Arizona and a Distinguished Service Citation from the Uni-versity of Kansas.
Hinshaw is a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society of North America, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
