Report: U-M graduate schools receive top rankings

The University continues to be a leader in higher education in the U.S. News & World Report annual ranking of the nation’s best graduate schools.

Among the programs ranked each year in America’s Best Graduate Schools — business, education, engineering, law and medicine — U-M maintained top-12 rankings across the board. The University also is in the top 10 in 40 specialties. Higher education administration and nuclear engineering, moved into the top positions in their fields. All told, 24 of the 40 specialties in which U-M is ranked either improved their positions or remained the same.

The College of Engineering maintained its previous position, tying for ninth with Cornell University, while the School of Education dropped from 6th to 9th. The Stephen M. Ross School of Business (12th) and Law School (9th) each dropped one spot. The Medical School tied for 11th with Columbia University among research-oriented schools, and was 17th (tied with East Carolina) in the primary care category.

Many specialties did not receive new rankings this year. But among those that did, U-M was ranked as follows:

• Business specialties: accounting (5), executive MBA (9), international (4), management (4), marketing (7), nonprofit (5), part-time MBA (10) and production/operations (5);

• Education specialties: curriculum/instruction (7), educational psychology (3), educational policy (6), elementary education (9), higher education administration (1) and secondary education (6);

• Engineering specialties: aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical (5), civil (8), computer engineering (6), electrical/electronic/communications (6), environmental (5), industrial/manufacturing (2), materials (7), mechanical (4) and nuclear (1);

• Law specialties: clinical training (9), international law (7) and tax law (10);

• Medical specialties: family medicine (7), geriatrics (5), internal medicine (7) and women’s health (5);

• Public affairs/public policy overall ranked at 7, tying with Kansas and University of South Carolina;

• Computer science overall ranked at 13, tied with Columbia University;

• Earth sciences overall (5); specialties: geochemistry (5), geology (5) and paleontology (3);

• Mathematics overall (9); specialties: algebra/number theory/algebraic geometry (4), analysis (9), discrete math and combinations (4), geometry (10), statistics (10) and topology (10);

• Physics overall (13); specialties: atomic/molecular/optical (6);

• Fine arts (37);

• Clinical psychology (25), tied with seven other schools;

• Pharmacy (5), tied with three other schools; and

• Social work (2).
