Woolliscroft named executive associate dean
Prof. James O. Woolliscroft was appointed executive associate dean of the Medical School, effective Nov. 1.
Woolliscroft is professor of internal medicine, the Josiah Macy, Jr. Professor of Medical Education, and associate dean for graduate medical education.
Jackson named to Murfin Professorship
John E. Jackson will hold the James Orin Murfin Professorship of Political Science in LS&A, effective July 1, 1999.
Jackson, who joined the U-M in 1980, also is professor of political science and of business administration.
“Throughout his career at Michigan, Prof. Jackson has successfully taught undergraduate and graduate courses on American politics, political economy and research methods,” said LS&A Dean Shirley Neuman. “In addition, he has served as editor and reviewer on many projects, as a member of the editorial boards of the American Journal of Political Science and Political Methodology, while maintaining an active profile as researcher and lecturer. His research has been recognized by a Guggenheim Fellowship and, most recently, a Fulbright Research Fellowship in support of his study of economic transformation in contemporary Poland.”
Jackson was director of the Taubman Program in American Institutions in 1981–87 and chair of the Department of Political Science in 1994–99.
$16.7 million in gifts accepted
The Regents accepted $16,793,259 in gifts received during October. The total includes $7,698,772 from individuals, $3,953,958 from corporations, $4,745,527 from foundations and $395,002 from associations and others.
West Hall renovation approved
The Regents approved initiating the planning for renovation of West Hall, which was designed by Albert Kahn. It was constructed in 1904, with a major addition constructed in 1910, and minor additions in the 1950s.
“The proposed project will involve renovation, to various degrees, of approximately 161,000 gross square feet,” explained Robert Kasdin, executive vice president and chief financial officer. “The building will continue to house the School of Information, the Department of Physics and the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. These areas will receive upgrades to certain infrastructure components. The remainder of the building will be renovated for the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Statistics.”
The state will fund up to $11,250,000 and the University will fund the balance of the estimated $15 million project.
Albert Kahn Associates Inc. will be commissioned to design the renovation project.
