Medical School plans renovations for leased property

The Medical School received approval to renovate approximately 30,000 square feet leased at the KMS Building on South State Street in Ann Arbor. The $1.6 million project, funded by the Medical School, will improve the layout and efficiency of its Faculty Group Practice billing unit and is expected to be complete next spring.

Improvements planned for Moore building

The Earl V. Moore Building, home of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, will receive approximately $5 million in infrastructure updates to improve energy performance, including new windows, insulation and a new boiler plant. The project, funded by investment proceeds and Utility resources, will be completed next fall.

Project to replace health building elevators

Replacement of the three elevators within the Thomas Francis Jr. Public Health Building was approved. The $1.5 million project will be paid for from the General Fund and is expected to be complete in winter 2010

Property purchases approved

The regents authorized the purchase of an apartment building at 210 Glen Ave., Ann Arbor, located next to the Ann Street and Catherine Street parking structures and contiguous to other University property. A purchase price of $495,000 has been negotiated. The purchase of property contiguous to University property in the Wall Street district also was approved. A purchase price of $800,000 has been negotiated for the commercial building located at 990 Broadway.

Retirements

Klaus-Peter Beier, research scientist, Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, CoE, effective June 30. He joined U-M in 1984. He introduced virtual reality to U-M by founding the Virtual Reality Lab in 1993. In 2002 he became director of the 3D Lab at the Duderstadt Center. Recently he has been working with virtual avatar animation, resulting in new methods for scripting complex movements of virtual humans.

Dr. Philip Cascade, professor of radiology and professor of internal medicine, Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the University in 1991. His research and teaching focus is in cardiac imaging. He is the author of 72 peer-reviewed publications, 18 audiovisual educational products and 73 abstracts, book reviews and other communications.

Stephen Darwall, John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy, professor of philosophy and director of the Honors Program, LSA, effective May 31. He joined U-M in 1984. He is a leading authority on the British moral philosophers and the author of the textbook “Philosophical Ethics,” which is widely used throughout the world.

Dr. Bartley Frueh, professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the University in 1979. He is an acknowledged world expert on thyroid-associated eye disease, including Graves and blepharospasm. He has been an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology for two decades.

David Lewis, professor of business history in the Ross School, effective May 31. He joined U-M in 1965. Lewis was an accomplished historian, author and teacher of business history, including entrepreneurship and automotive history, with a special interest in the life of Henry Ford and the history of the Ford Motor Co. He authored hundreds of articles and nine books on these topics.

Gary Olson, Paul M. Fitts Collegiate Professor of Human-Computer Interaction and professor of information, School of Information, and professor of psychology, LSA, effective June 30. He joined the University in 1975. As associate dean, he was instrumental in reshaping the School of Information after its change in scope and mission in 1996, leading to the revitalization of the doctoral program.

Judith Spencer Olson, Richard W. Pew collegiate Professor of Human-Computer Interaction, professor of information, and associate dean for academic affairs, School of Information, professor of computer and information systems, Ross School, and professor of psychology, LSA, effective June 30. She joined U-M in 1970, left in 1980, and returned in 1983. She is a leading scholar in the fields of human-computer interaction and collaboration.

James Reece, professor of accounting and operations management in the Ross School, effective Dec. 31, 2007. He joined the University in 1975. He was an active teacher in undergraduate and graduate degree programs. He co-authored several accounting textbooks that have been published regularly in updated editions. He received the Victor Bernard teaching Leadership Award in 1997 and the Andy Andrews Distinguished Faculty Service Award in 2007.
