Cancer Center to offer services in Canton
On July 21, the Board of Regents approved a proposal to add a chemotherapy infusion area at the U-M Health System Canton Health Center. The new space will be 4,300 gross square feet and will include nine infusion treatment chairs, laboratory services and a new CT scanner for imaging scans that indicate whether chemotherapy treatment is working. Cancer Center nurses will staff the center. The renovations are budgeted at $4.7 million, primarily for the purchase of new equipment. Funding will come from the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers resources. It is expected to open in summer 2006.
Family Med moving to Domino’s Farms
The Family Medicine Clinic at the East Ann Arbor Health Center (EAAHC) will relocate next spring to leased space at Domino’s Farms. The regents approved a $2.65 million project budget to renovate and equip 12,500 square feet of clinic and office space, which includes $1.6 million for moveable equipment. The relocation will enable the expansion of the Japanese and Executive Health programs with the clinic, and will make room for the anticipated future relocation of the Geriatrics Program to the EAAHC.
Emergency power to be installed at Hatcher
An electrical generator will be installed at the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library in order to provide a second source of power for life-safety systems as required by building codes. The installation in the loading dock area is scheduled to be completed next summer and is estimated to cost $850,000.

Retirements
Clauria Collin, assistant professor of education,
U-M-Dearborn, effective June 30. Collin joined the University in 1984. She developed and taught courses in educational psychology, strategies, reading and language arts, and special education. She contributed significantly to the School of Education’s educational psychology courses.
Dr. Robert Hayashi, J. Robert Willson Collegiate Professor of Obstetrics and professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the Medical School, effective June 30. Hayashi joined the University in 1985. He has made extensive contributions to the medical field with peer-reviewed articles and chapters in medical literature.
Lawrence Hirschfeld, professor of anthropology and professor of psychology in LSA, effective May 31. He joined the University as a visiting assistant professor in 1989 and was appointed assistant professor of anthropology in 1991. His research has broken ground in articulating fundamental relationships between anthropology and cognitive psychology.
Dr. Richard Johnson, clinical professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry, effective May 31. Johnson joined U-M in 1970. He was director of the graduate orthodontic clinic and of the orthodontic program for pediatric dentistry residents, program director of predoctoral orthodontics and coordinator of the graduate orthodontic clinical instructor teaching team.
Dr. Lysle Johnston Jr., professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry, effective May 31. Johnston joined the University in 1991. He has studied the differential effects of various orthodontic treatments and mechanisms of facial growth. He has advised about 100 master’s thesis students and contributed to the education of more than 300 orthodontic specialists.
Theodore Morrison, associate professor of conducting in the School of Music, effective May 31. Morrison joined U-M in 1987. As a composer of choral music, Morrison contributed several significant works, including an overture, a symphonic poem, chamber pieces for winds and strings and several large works for chorus and orchestra.
Mary Periard, director of nursing and associate professor of nursing in the School of Health Professions and Studies at U-M-Flint, effective Aug. 15. Periard joined the University in 1980. Her work focused on areas that included home care services, school nursing and the development of a model for teaching individuals and groups how to do a breast self-exam.
Henry Pollack, professor of geological sciences in LSA, effective May 31. Pollack joined U-M in 1964. His principal research efforts have addressed Earth’s internal heat and how the planet has cooled over time. He was influential in a new field of study, borehole paleoclimatology that uses temperatures from terrestrial boreholes to reconstruct historical climate changes.
Nancy Reame, the Rhetaugh Graves Dumas Professor of Nursing and professor of nursing in the School of Nursing and research professor in the Reproductive Sciences Program, effective Aug. 31. She joined the University in 1980. Reame has focused on the reproductive sciences. She was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 1997.
Robert Wolfe, professor of biostatistics in the School of Public Health, effective June 30. He joined U-M in 1977. His legacy includes original contributions to statistical methodology as well as evidence-based investigations that have provided key results for major scientific and policy.
