LSA advising office to expand
Administrative offices for the LSA Office of Student Academic Affairs will be renovated and expanded during the next year. Space on the ground and first floors of Angell Hall will be renovated and reconfigured to meet current needs for academic advising and office staff. A new interior stairway will connect the two floors to facilitate business operations and student interactions. LSA resources and gifts will fund the $3.5 million project, which is being designed by the Plant Extension-Architecture, Engineering and Construction department. The project is scheduled to be completed next spring.

Retirements
M. David Curtis, professor of chemistry in LSA and professor of macromolecular science and engineering in the College of Engineering, effective May 31. He joined the University in 1967. Curtis’ early research focused on the radical chemistry of silicon. His recent work has focused on the syntheses and characterization of new classes of conducting polymers for organic light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors and electrolytes for Li-ion battery technology.
Frank Garland, associate professor of chemistry in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL) at U-M Dearborn, effective April 30. He joined U-M-Dearborn in 1983. Garland’s research expertise is physical biochemistry. Much of his work has focused on studying the conformation of muscle proteins by means of fluorescence energy transfer. He served as chair of the chemistry department and sat on many committees.
Alvin Jensen, associate professor of biometry in the School of Natural Resources and Environment, effective June 30. He joined U-M in 1973. His scholarly interests have focused on the areas of sampling, contaminate uptake and transfer, environmental assessment, fishery assessment, and modeling dynamics of populations and communities. Jensen has published more than 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Marvin Kirsh, professor of surgery in the Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the University in 1968. He has made many contributions to cardiac surgery and resident education. Kirsh is a meticulous instructor of surgical technique. He is known for the dedication, devotion and passion he brings to the task of educating the next generation of cardiac surgeons. Kirsh has authored more than 200 manuscripts and book chapters.
Richard Norman, associate professor of biology in CASL at U-M-Dearborn, effective April 30. He joined the University in 1975. Norman’s research expertise is in neurophysiology but his interests are much broader. Most of his teaching was in neurobiology, but he also taught courses in receptors and cell signaling, cell biology, environmental physiology and others. He always explored every aspect of a question.
Carl Pierson, assistant professor of microbiology in the Medical School, effective June 30. Pierson joined U-M in 1973. His early research centered on the biology of infections in burn patients, and his work later expanded into areas relating to clinical laboratory screening of pathogenic bacteria and evaluation of microbial sensitivity to antibiotics. Pierson has served as a key consultant to the microbiology lag staff.
Thomas Schaal, associate professor of nursing and assistant director of academic programs for nursing graduate studies in the School of Health Professions and Studies at U-M-Flint, effective May 31. Schaal joined the University in 1994. He designed and implemented the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner curriculum and developed the R.N./M.S.N. admission option. Schaal also co-designed and implemented the Master of Science in Nursing Nurse Practitioner Program at U-M-Flint.
Ronald Silverman, professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at U-M-Flint, effective June 30. He joined the University in 1972. Silverman was chair of the Budget Priorities Committee and Chancellor’s Advisory Committee and served as department chair for two terms. His interests focused on clinical psychology. Silverman developed the department’s bachelor of science degree program in clinical/community psychology.
Harriet Wall, professor of psychology in CAS at U-M-Flint, effective June 30. Wall joined the University in 1972. She served as interim director of research, interim associate dean and interim dean. She completed three terms as department chair. For many years, Wall was an adviser to Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology. The department has established the Harriet M. Wall Department of Psychology Lecture Series.
