Editor’s note: The following actions were taken by the Board of Regents at its July meeting.
Second cardiac cath lab for Mott
A second biplane cardiac catheterization laboratory will be added at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in fall 2005. Approximately 1,200 square feet of space on level 1 will be renovated to accommodate the new lab. Therapeutic interventional procedures in the current lab increased 31 percent in the past two years, creating long wait times. HarleyEllis will design the project, which is estimated to cost $4.2 million, including $3.6 million for equipment. Funding will be provided from Hospitals and Health Centers’ resources.
Events Center to be added near Crisler Arena
An Events Center, with capacity to accommodate 300 people, will be built below grade between Crisler Arena and Michigan Stadium. The center will provide a venue to conduct athletic recruiting events, graduations, convocations and new student orientation activities. Rossetti Architects will design the center, and construction is expected to be completed next fall. Athletic Department resources and gifts will fund the $4.5 million project budget.
Two utilities projects approved
A new 24-inch low-pressure steam line will connect the Central Power Plant to the Victor Vaughn Building to accommodate increased facility growth in the Medical Campus. At the same time, the existing 30-year-old domestic water supply pipes will be replaced, which will improve water quality. Black and Veatch will provide the design and Utility resources will fund the $3.75 million project budget. Construction is scheduled to be completed next spring.
A 30-year-old chiller serving the Institute for Social Research building is beyond its useful life and will be replaced by next spring. General fund resources will fund the $910,000 project budget.
Two projects to be issued for bid
Regents authorized issuing two previously approved building projects for bids and awarding construction contracts providing the bids are within budgets. The 52,000-gross-square-foot addition to the Perry Building, to house the Survey Operations unit and the Rackham Interdisciplinary Program in Survey Methodology, is expected to be completed in summer 2006. Additionally, the 29,000-gross-square-foot expansion of the U-M-Dearborn Science Building is scheduled to be completed in winter 2006.
Committee membership changes
Regents announced changes July 15 in the membership of two standing committees, following the appointment last month of Rebecca McGowan as the new board chair and Andrea Fischer Newman as vice chair. Past board chair Laurence Deitch will join regents Olivia Maynard (committee chair) and Andrew Richner on the Compensation and Personnel Committee. Regent Katherine White now will be a member of the Finance, Audit and Investment Committee, along with previous members David Brandon (committee chair) and S. Martin Taylor.
Board of Regents approve ‘05 meeting schedule
The Board of Regents approved its 2005 calendar at the July meeting. The schedule is: Jan. 20, Feb. 17, March 17, April 21, May 19 (at U-M-Dearborn), June 16, July 21, Sept. 15, Oct. 21 (at U-M-Flint), Nov. 17 and Dec. 15. The regents will meet the third Thursday of every month except October (the meeting will be on a Friday) and August (no meeting). Meetings for the remainder of 2004 are: Sept. 23, Oct. 21 (at U-M-Flint), Nov. 18 and Dec. 16.

Retirements
George Cameron III, professor of business law in the Business School, effective June 30, 2004. He joined the University in 1971. Cameron received the students’ award for teaching excellence several times. In 1998, his course in enterprise organization law was named the best course on campus by the Michigan Daily. His research activity focused on Korean law, Soviet commercial law, jurisdiction over international operations, and Chinese law.
David Moody, professor of psychology in LSA and research professor in the Kresge Hearing Research Institute, effective June 30, 2003. He joined U-M in 1968. Moody is considered a leading expert in the use of behavioral training techniques for the assessment of auditory function in animal subjects.
Michael Ryan, professor of marketing in the Business School, effective June 30, 2004. Ryan joined U-M in 1981. His major interests include marketing management and theory, strategic marketing planning, and sales management. He was an early pioneer in the field of customer satisfaction preferences and statistical measurement.
