Editor’s Note: The following actions were taken by the Regents at their July meeting.

7 faculty appointments approved

Faculty appointments, with tenure, approved included:

Jeffrey R. Edwards from the University of Virginia will become associate professor of organizational behavior and human resource management, effective Sept. 1.

David William Cohen from Northwestern University will become professor of history and of anthropology, effective

Sept. 1.

Edwin M. Curley from the University of Illinois at Chicago will become professor of philosophy, effective Sept. 1.

Marjorie Levinson from the University of Pennsylvania will become professor of English, effective Sept. 1.

James R. Corbett from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center will become professor of internal medicine, effective July 16.

Steven C. Dronen from the University of Cincinnati will become associate professor of surgery, effective July 16.

Alexander J. Ninfa, from Wayne State University, will become associate professor of biological chemistry, effective Sept. 1.

Administrative appointments ok’d

Administrative appointments approved included:

Gene E. Smith, professor of mechanical engineering, was reappointed assistant dean of the College of Engineering for a three-year term, effective Sept. 1.

Ronald F. Fleming, professor of nuclear engineering, was reappointed director of the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Project for a four and one-half year term, effective Feb. 1, 1994.

J. Bernard Machen, professor of dentistry, was reappointed dean of the School of Dentistry for a five-year term, effective Oct. 1, 1994.

Violet H. Barkauskas, associate professor of nursing, was reappointed associate dean for administration, School of Nursing, for a three-year term, effective July 1.

Noreen M. Clark, professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, was reappointed chair of her department for a three-year term, effective Sept. 1.

2 Med Sci I auditoriums will be refurbished

The following building renovation projects were approved:

Two 200-seat auditoriums in Medical Science Building I will be refurbished at an estimated cost of $1.2 million. “The refurbishing will address the current situation of poor acoustics and lighting, as well as original finishes and furniture,” Vice President Farris W. Womack said.

“The irreplaceable anthropology collections, now housed in non-air-conditioned space in the East Engineering Building, are to be relocated to environmentally controlled space in 1239 Kipke Drive.” The project is estimated to cost $294,000.

The carpet in the public areas in the Mardigian Library at the U-M-Dearborn requires replacement. The project is estimated to cost $275,000.

“The U-M-Dearborn’s Grounds Department must vacate the Henry Ford Estate Power House in order to provide safe working conditions and prevent damages the occupancy incurs upon the historic structure,” Womack explained. A 5,250-gross-square-foot pre-engineered steel building, with brick and concrete block exterior, will be located behind the Monteith Parking Structure. The project’s budget is set at $452,000.

Ted Spencer approved as admissions chief

The appointment of Theodore L. Spencer as director of undergraduate admissions was approved, effective Aug. 1, for a five-year term.

Spencer joined the U-M in 1989 as associate director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. In that role he was responsible for developing and implementing programs to recruit both new and transfer students. He was named interim director in June 1992.
