At its December meeting, the Board of Regents revised the University’s ordinance to regulate parking and traffic, as well as the use and protection of U-M buildings and property.
“The major changes are the decriminalization of most violation penalties and adjustments to the parking fine rates,” said Executive Vice President Farris W. Womack.
“Based upon experience during the past three years, the proposed revisions and additions are recommended for updating the ordinance as of Jan. 1, 1995.
“The parking fines were recommended by the Parking Advisory Committee, which includes members from across the campus.
“The changes were published in draft form in The Michigan Daily and The University Record, inviting written comments from faculty, staff and students. Comments were reviewed by the Safety and Security Advisory Committee.
“Recommendations of the committee resulted in a moderation of some rates from the published amounts, as recommended by the committee.”
Womack noted that the University recently adjusted enforcement hours, and is studying additional visitor parking.
“The parking fine increases,” he said, “are to encourage compliance, specifically the expired meter fine, which is designed to provide an incentive to utilize visitor parking for short-term use.
“The parking fine revenues are used for improving safety and security on campus, such as expenditures for the Campus Safety Handbook and the new Universitywide alarm system.”
