Revisions to the University of Michigan Board of Regents’ Bylaw 3.10, which governs ownership of patents and copyrights, have been proposed and are posted for public comment.
Comments are due by Jan. 23 and regents will consider the revisions at their Feb. 16 meeting.

The bylaw amendments simplify and modernize the policy in view of legal developments relating to processes for assignment of patent rights. The amendments:
- Do not affect the scope of intellectual property to which U-M is entitled to ownership.
- Simplify the patent assignment process.
- Update Bylaw 3.10 to highlight the university’s preferences with respect to transferring its copyright in scholarly works to the faculty who created those works.
