Three crime alerts issued
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued three crime alerts in May—an attempted strong arm robbery in a Northwood parking lot May 21, a home invasion in Markley Hall May 25 and a larceny at the Central Campus Recreation Building (CCRB) May 25.
Around midnight May 21, two students reported they were approached from behind by two people as they walked from the Media Union in the 2200 block of Cram Place. The female suspect demanded their wallets, but the students refused. The female then grabbed one of the students and again demanded a wallet. The students screamed and the suspects fled. The female suspect is described as a Black female approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall with a medium build and wearing a dark jacket. The second suspect is described as a Black male, approximately 6 feet tall with a muscular build and wearing a hood on his head. DPS is continuing its investigation of the incident.
At approximately 11 a.m. May 25, a suspect allegedly entered an unlocked residence room at Markley Hall and stole the resident’s purse and camera. The purse and most of its contents were recovered in a nearby stairwell. A suspect description was not released.
A few minutes later, DPS received a call from staff at the CCRB indicating a robbery had just occurred. A staff person had encountered an unknown male attempting to open an empty cash drawer. The suspect fled when confronted by the staff person. The subsequent investigation revealed that a wallet was missing from a desk in the same area. The suspect is described as a Black male approximately 18 to 20 years old with a mustache and short hair, wearing a light blue shirt or jacket.

DPS assists Click It or Ticket campaign
DPS officers joined hundreds of law enforcement agencies throughout the state in supporting the Office of Highway Safety Planning Click It or Ticket campaign over the Memorial Day weekend. Officers conducted increased enforcement of the safety belt law. During the three-day campaign, DPS officers conducted approximately 230 vehicle stops and issued 161 adult restraint violations and one youth restraint violation. Additionally, officers gave 67 verbal warnings, made 15 misdemeanor arrests and issued 25 citations for other violations.
Small fire in Chemistry Building
A small fire occurred May 10 in a fume hood on the second floor of the Chemistry Bldg. The building was evacuated for approximately 45 minutes. Lab staff members were disposing of chemicals that had been placed in the fume hood when they ignited. DPS officers, Ann Arbor Fire Department personnel and staff from U-M’s Occupational Safety and Environmental Health worked with the lab staff to contain and extinguish the fire and clean up the area. Damage was contained within the fume hood.
Student arrested for false police report
A 19-year-old Engineering student was arrested June 5 on a felony charge of filing a false police report. The Couzens Hall resident called DPS May 9 to report that his roommate had been shot. Responding officers determined the report to be false. He is scheduled for his preliminary examination June 19 and faces up to four years in jail or a fine up to $2000 or both.
