Alice Lloyd fire alarm damaged

The fire alarm system at Alice Lloyd was rendered inoperative Feb. 22 after an unknown person(s) sprayed ammonium chloride into the main fire alarm panel. Housing Security officers provided a “fire watch” through the remainder of the night and following day until repairs could be completed. A reward of up to $1,000 is available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone connected with the crime. Persons with information should call the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Tip Line, (734) 763-9180.

Cleaning company caught in the act

Employees of a Dearborn Heights cleaning company were observed Feb. 19 pouring used cleaning solution down an outside drain near the University Hospital’s Emergency Room. Staff from Occupational Safety and Environmental Health responded and successfully retrieved the liquid before it made its way into the sewer system. The cleaners were charged with a conservation law violation of the Federal Clean Air Act.

Car stolen from lot M-60

A 1988 black Chevrolet Caprice was stolen Feb. 23 from lot M-60 off Ann Street on the Medical Campus. No suspects have been identified.

Two more LCD projectors stolen

Two more LCD projectors were stolen in February, adding to the two stolen in January. Three of the projectors have been removed from buildings on North Campus, while the Feb. 5 incident occurred in Dennison Physics and Astronomy Building. The projectors range in value from $4,250 to $10,000 and had been secured with locked cable. DPS has received reports that similar projectors have been stolen from other southeast Michigan universities in recent months. Please call 911 immediately if you see unknown or suspicious people in classroom buildings after hours.

Property stolen from unlocked rooms

Several students in residence halls had property stolen when persons entered their unlocked rooms. A Stockwell resident’s purse was stolen Feb. 17. A suspect was identified after $2,500 was withdrawn from the victim’s bank account using a stolen ATM card. On Feb. 19, a phone and jacket were taken from a room in Betsey Barbour. On Feb. 15, several personal items were stolen from a room in West Quad as the occupants slept.

In addition, a television and Sega Dreamcast were stolen from a Vera Baits room. The suspect entered through a window.

Stolen parking permit recovered

A stolen parking permit was recovered from a vehicle parked in the Church Street Parking Structure. The vehicle’s owner indicated he had purchased the permit from an unknown male. The owner was charged with receiving and concealing stolen property.

Minor activity at Visibility Rally

A 20-year-old male was arrested Feb. 16 at the Visibility Rally on the Diag after spray-painting a sign held by a Kansas demonstrator. The suspect was charged with malicious destruction of property and released pending authorization from the county prosecutor.

Additionally, two other Kansas demonstrators were assaulted by two unknown females with shaving cream pies. The suspects fled into a nearby classroom building and could not be located.
