Man arraigned in connection with carjacking at University Hospital
A 20-year-old Ypsilanti man was arraigned yesterday and charged with carjacking and resisting arrest. The man allegedly stopped a woman driving an SUV in a parking lot near the Hospital, took the vehicle and led police on a 20-minute chase through Washtenaw County, causing several accidents on the way. He faces a sentence of up to life in prison on the carjacking charge, and up to two years in prison for resisting arrest, a misdemeanor. A preliminary examination is slated for July 19 in 15th District Court. He is currently being held in the Washtenaw County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
The man had been visiting his older brother, who is hospitalized after sustaining critical injuries when he crashed a stolen pickup truck into a tree while trying to elude authorities, police say.
Palm computers missing
Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers are still investigating the reported theft on June 14 of two palm computing devices, one valued at $350 and the other valued at $400, from the fourth floor of Medical Science Research Building III. Officers have interviewed several people. They note that there was no sign of forced entry.
Door damaged in attempted entry
An employee coming in to work on June 22 called DPS to report that the door to Room 2070 in the Walter E. Lay Automotive Lab was bent and he suspected that someone had tried to illegally gain entry to the office. Officers responding noted that the attempt was unsuccessful and nothing was missing from the room. The incident is still under investigation.
Youth arrested for possession of alcohol
DPS officers on patrol noticed three youths pulling at the exterior doors to Oosterbaan Field House on the evening of June 24, and stopped to investigate. Two of the three fled on foot, but officers detained the third young man, who was charged with trespassing and illegal consumption of alcohol. The case is currently under review in the 15th District Court.
Golf carts taken on night ride
An employee reported to DPS officers on June 30 that damage had been done to the greens and flags at the U-M Golf Course. Officers investigated the scene and found that the fence surrounding the carts had been broken. DPS officers are still investigating and would appreciate any information that may help them find the alleged perpetrators. To report any information, call (734) 763-1131.
Motorcycle reported stolen
DPS officers received a report June 8 that a motorcycle had been stolen from the Cornwell guest house. A resident there told officers that he had been in Europe for a month, and on his return could not locate the motorcycle. After checking with friends, the man reported to DPS that it had been stolen. Officers are still looking for a 1995 Honda, described as white with yellow and purple markings. Anyone who has any information is urged to call DPS at (734) 763-1131.
