Computers recovered in Brighton
DPS officers traced to Livingston County a suspect in several computer thefts. The man, who is not affiliated with the University, is in custody after DPS officers, working with the Michigan State Police in Brighton, developed information linking him to the crimes. The man is described as a career criminal, Smiley says, and has numerous charges pending against him in both federal and state courts.
Man arrested in criminal sexual assault case
A man not affiliated with the University is in Washtenaw County Jail following his arrest May 30 on a charge of criminal sexual assault, third degree. The man is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old resident of Arbor Heights in the lounge at East Quadrangle Residence Hall in January. The girl allegedly left the Arbor Heights facility and met the man, then went with him to the lounge, where the alleged assault occurred. The man was arraigned May 31 before Magistrate George Parker and a preliminary hearing was held June 10.
Car thefts increase
Smiley reports that a number of recent car thefts are under investigation by DPS officers. Several attempted thefts were reported on June 9, all in or near the NW46 parking lot in the Family Housing complex on North Campus. On that day, a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass was vandalized in what Smiley describes as an attempted break-in, and a window was smashed in a 1990 Buick. On June 10, a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer was damaged in an attempted theft from lot NC6, and on June 14 a 1991 Chevrolet Suburban was stolen. The Suburban was later recovered on Detroit’s east side by Detroit police officers. The car had been burned.
Michigan State Police, working with DPS-developed information, arrested a 17-year-old male, not affiliated with the University, who allegedly had been stealing cars to drive home from his job near Dixon and Plymouth roads and then destroying them. The 17-year-old is being held by Detroit Police, and the DPS investigation continues.
DPS reports incidents of indecent exposure
Several incidents of indecent exposure have been reported, and DPS officers are trying to determine if they are related. On May 20, a witness reported seeing a white male approximately 30 years of age expose himself at Nichols Arboretum at about 1 p.m. In the very early morning of May 28, a man was reported exhibiting the same behavior on the Diag. He was estimated to be in his 20s. On June 4, a white male in his 30s was reported for indecent exposure at Matthaei Botanical Gardens at approximately 2 p.m.
Smiley asks that anyone witnessing similar behavior call DPS officers, 763-1131.
