8 Man jailed on sexual assault charges
A 25-year-old male graduate student is being held in Washtenaw County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond in connection with two separate cases of criminal sexual assault. On March 30 at 6:45 p.m. he allegedly approached a female student near Mason Hall and sexually assaulted her. He is accused of sexually assaulting another woman shortly after noon on March 31.
Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers developed information in both cases and two warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of criminal sexual assault 4th degree. On April 2, he was arraigned in Washtenaw County’s 15th District Court and jailed. He has waived an April 8 preliminary examination and the case is pending.
Student charged in February sexual assault case
As reported in the Record last month, DPS officers continued to investigate reports of a criminal sexual assault on a female student that she said occurred in South Quadrangle Residence Hall in the early morning hours of Feb. 13. Working on information they received, officers developed their investigation and on March 31 charged an 18-year-old male student with one count of criminal sexual conduct 3rd degree, a felony, and one count of criminal sexual conduct 4th degree, a misdemeanor. He was arraigned in 15th District Court before Magistrate James Sexsmith and has been released on personal bond pending an April 22 preliminary examination.
50 arrested at Hash Bash
DPS officers, deputies from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department, Ann Arbor police and Michigan State Police troopers worked together during the April 4 annual Hash Bash on the Diag and arrested 50 people, most for possession of marijuana. Of the 50, three were U-M students, two were staff members and six were juveniles. The remainder, according to DPS Capt. James Smiley, were visitors to the Ann Arbor campus and not affiliated with the University.
Smiley reports that there were fewer arrests this year than last. DPS also issued tickets for various infractions, including minors in possession and sales of goods on University property.
Man arrested for stealing drill
A man not affiliated with the University visited the School of Dentistry on March 19 and took a dentist’s drill from the building, according to the charge made by DPS officers. The man appeared in 15th District Court on April 1 and pled guilty to a reduced charge of larceny under $100. The case has been closed.
DPS investigates attempted robbery
DPS officers are investigating a reported attempted robbery that allegedly occurred March 24 at Elbel Field, near the intersection of Hill and Fifth streets. A man not affiliated with the University said that two men approached him and demanded money. The victim also said that he thought the two had a gun. The alleged robber did not obtain any money and DPS has no suspects in the case.
