Photo: U-M photographers snap up top honors in photo competition

Before Al Gore walked to the podium in October to deliver the annual Peter M. Wege Lecture, Photo Services Photographer Martin Vloet captured this award-winning shot of the former vice president, as Gore downloaded the latest NASA satellite images of Gulf Coast hurricanes. Vloet has been named Photographer of the Year by the University Photographers’ Association of America (UPAA). He also won first place for science and research, and general publications; second place for news and features (for the Gore shot) and for general publications; and third place for sports photography. Scott Galvin, photographer intermediate, also received honors, including first place for portraits, and second place for science and research photography. Vloet and colleague Lin Jones won awards in four of five categories in the UPAA Monthly Image Competition, bringing to 25 the total for U-M in the 2005-06 academic year. The most recent monthly awards included: overall-Vloet, portrait-Jones; sports-Vloet, science and research-Vloet, and news and feature-Vloet. The UPAA is an international organization of college and university photographers founded in 1961. (Photo by Martin Vloet, U-M Photo Services)
