One of Parking Services’ goals is to prevent safety hazards by repairing damage due to salt and age before the damage becomes disabling. In the long run this is also a cost-saving strategy since deterioration spawns other deterioration in related components.
While performing such repairs, Parking Services tries to minimize inconvenience to the campus community to the extent possible, notes Susan A. Kirkpatrick, manager of Parking Services.
For this reason, Parking Services has worked with the contractor to open a portion of the Church Street parking structure (297 parking spaces) by Sept. 11.
Parking choices and options
What are the options for the remaining 284 faculty and staff who may not find space at Church Street? With the expansion of reduced rate and commuter parking, the occupancy in all Central Campus structures has been reduced and typically there is space available on a daily basis, totaling about 230 parking spaces at the Thompson, Thayer, Hill, and Fletcher parking structures, Kirkpatrick says.
Other options for the remaining 54 staff members who normally park in the Church Street structure:
Many faculty and staff traveling west to Ann Arbor save time and money by parking in the Glazier Way Commuter Lot and taking the bus to Central Campus, thereby avoiding the traffic, notes Kirkpatrick.
“We are concerned that members of the campus community should not drastically increase walking time to their place of work. Depending on where your work site is located, parking at an alternate structure should achieve this goal for the majority of parkers,” she says.
Faculty and staff who park at SC-5N or the Glazier Way Commuter Lot and ride the bus may exchange their staff paid permit for either a reduced rate or commuter parking permit and receive a prorated refund from Parking Services, 508 Thompson Street.
