Piyush Chamanlal Kothary, 80, died unexpectedly June 28 in the comfort of his home. Piyush will be sorely missed by all. Piyush has donated his body to the University of Michigan.

Piyush was a proud resident of Ann Arbor, had served the University of Michigan for more than 45 years as a mentor and research scientist and was an accomplished writer with three publications. He was a loving father and grandfather, husband to his late wife, Sarla, brother, son, uncle and a perpetual teacher and role model to anyone who knew him.

He will be remembered as a comforting, strong and independent man whose eternal love for his late wife never wavered. He was a dedicated philanthropist supporting women’s education donating to the SPRJK School in India and the ARVO Foundation where he created a grant for women research scientists in ophthalmology. While his death was sudden and unexpected, he passed away peacefully and is now with his loving wife and soulmate, Sarla.

Piyush was born in Myanmar and raised in Mumbai with his six brothers and sisters. He was the son of Chamanlal and Labhuben Kothary. After years of studying and teaching at St. Xavier’s college in Mumbai, Piyush married Sarla in 1970 and they moved to Ann Arbor and lived a life full of love, enjoyment and harmony.

Piyush leaves behind two daughters, Shilpa Kothary (Kaytan Amrute) and Priya Kothary (Jote Sethi) and three granddaughters, Deven Amrute, Misha Sethi and Mayla Sethi.
