NIKE, U team up

The University and NIKE have joined in a project that will, among other things, create two women’s athletic scholarships and fund the nation’s first fellowship for sports reporters in the Michigan Journalism Fellows Program. Athletic Director Joe Roberson announced the agreement Oct. 20.

Through separately negotiated agreements, NIKE will become the exclusive on-field supplier of team uniforms and practice gear, as well as the licensee of authentic Organized Team Sports apparel.

In announcing the agreement, Roberson said the U-M chose to affiliate with NIKE in part because “corporately they represent the kind of values that the University of Michigan desires to be associated with. We feel that the high quality of our institution’s athletic programs is such that NIKE would enjoy the same outstanding return from our association.”

One of the endowed women’s scholarships will be designated for a student-athlete who exemplifies a commitment to improving the lives of America’s disadvantaged youth.

NIKE’s gift to the journalism fellows program will support sports writers.

“Sports reporting has been long-neglected within the profession, and this Fellowship will signal a change of attitude,” said Charles Eisendrath, Fellowships director. “Michigan will attract applications from the best people in the field.”

“The University of Michigan athlete represents the true meaning of the term ‘student-athlete,’ said Thomas E. Clarke, NIKE president and chief operating officer. “Michigan’s well-documented academic excellence has been paralleled by it ongoing commitment to national success on the field of competition. NIKE is proud to be associated with the University of Michigan.”

Among other elements of the agreement:

  • NIKE will sponsor interns who will work at NIKE in the summer in an area that corresponds to their major curricular emphasis.

  • NIKE and the U-M will construct an outdoor court facility in the Ann Arbor area utilizing recycled shoe materials.

NIKE Inc., based in Beaverton, Ore., is a leading designer and marketer of athletic footwear, apparel and accessories for a wide variety of sports and fitness activities.
