The LSA DEI Office and LSA Sustainability will host the DEI x Sustainability Summit: For People + Planet from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Michigan Union.
The event, which is free and open to U-M community members, will feature a keynote address by Shalanda Baker, vice provost for sustainability and climate action, opening remarks by LSA Dean Rosario Ceballo, and interactive workshops and lightning talks from LSA faculty and student experts.

“The University of Michigan’s carbon neutrality goals include centering environmental justice as a core principle,” Ceballo said. “This signature LSA event is just one opportunity to forward a vision of sustainability that protects both people and the planet.”
Based on the theme “Social Justice for a More Sustainable Future” and informed by Leah Thomas’ “The Intersectional Environmentalist,” this year’s DEI x Sustainability Summit will explore the intersection of social and environmental justice, and how that impacts the way people approach, think and talk about these issues.
“We all have a role to play in the campus transition to carbon neutrality and this comes with a responsibility to center those most affected by climate change,” said Isis Settles, associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion at LSA.
Lightning talks will focus on topics such as intersectional theory, environmental justice, recognizing privilege and the environmental impacts on communities of Blacks, Indigenous people and people of color.
Workshop topics include intersectional environmentalism, food and indirect emissions. As part of the day’s activities, participants can also join Earth Song: A Black Nature Walk at the Nichols Arboretum.
