Allen S. Lichter, professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, has been named the Isadore Lampe Professor of Radiation Oncology by the Regents.
The professorship honors Lampe, a pioneer in the field of radiation therapy, who pursued his career at the U-M for 43 years until his retirement in 1975. The professorship was made possible through departmental support, as well as contributions and pledges from alumni and friends of Lampe, who died in 1982.
Lichter has been chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology since 1984. Prior to 1984, he was director of the Radiation Therapy Section of the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Radiation Oncology Branch.
Lichter is internationally known for his research on the treatment of breast cancer. While at the NCI, he was an early advocate of the lumpectomy approach to the treatment of breast cancer and conducted one of the trials that found the use of lumpectomy and radiation therapy to be as effective as the traditional treatment of mastectomy. This work led to a revolution in modern breast cancer treatment standards, emphasizing breast preservation.
Lichter received his medical degree from the U-M and did postdoctoral training at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver and the University of California, San Francisco. He is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Lichter also is a fellow of the American College of Radiology. Fellowships are awarded to members for significant scientific or clinical research in the field of radiology or significant contributions to its literature.
