Library tool allows patrons to tag Internet information

The University Library has introduced a new tool to make it easier for library Web site patrons to organize, collect and share information.

MTagger lets users tag library Web pages, Mirlyn catalog entries, digital images or any Web page and then share their tag collections with others.

“MTagger is a handy way to organize your research, whether by class, by subject or anything else,” says Ken Varnum, University Library Web systems manager. “MTagger makes it easy to note interesting Web pages, books and images. And it helps you find interesting items that others have already found and tagged. Plus, with the universal tagging bookmarklet, you can tag any Web page on the Internet.”

A tag is a label that can be assigned to a Web page. Users customize labels with keywords that can provide a link to similar items. There is no limit to the number of keywords that can be added, and keywords can be edited over time. Like bookmarks or favorites in a Web browser, tags allow for collection and organization of Web pages. Unlike bookmarks or favorites, tags are accessible from any computer with an Internet connection.

The process is similar to adding keywords in Flickr or YouTube, labeling friends in a picture on Facebook or using Gmail labels to organize e-mail, Varnum says.
