The appointment of Lawrence D. Kugler as interim chancellor at U-M-Flint, effective Jan. 1, will be recommended by President James J. Duder-stadt to the Regents at their December meeting. Kugler is a professor of mathematics and former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

He will lead the Flint campus while the search continues for a permanent successor to Chancellor Clinton B. Jones, who will step down Dec. 31 to return to teaching.

In announcing the recommendation, Duderstadt said: “Dr. Kugler has had a long and distinguished career as a professor and administrator on the Flint campus. His experience and leadership will be of great help to the campus during a critical period of transition. I am grateful to him for assuming this responsibility.”

Kugler said he is “honored to be entrusted with the stewardship of the Chancellor’s Office in this time of transition. The University of Michigan-Flint is an exciting, important institution with a superb faculty and staff.”

Kugler served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) in 1983–91. He has taught in the Department of Mathematics since 1966, rising from assistant professor to full professor status in 1976.

Other administrative appointments have included serving as CAS acting dean (1982–83), chair of the Department of Mathematics (1978–81) and director of the Academic Computer Center (1970–75).

Kugler holds a bachelor’s degree from the California Institute of Technology and a master’s and Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has had numerous articles published in mathematics journals.
