Homecoming events go green

The Michigan Student Assembly has organized a week of events to celebrate the spirit and tradition of the 112th Homecoming.

In addition to the traditional pep rally and football game, this week’s events will showcase U-M’s commitment to promoting energy conservation, sustainability and understanding climate issues.

Gibran Baydoun, an MSA representative and one of the coordinators of the event, says the entire campus is involved this year. “We’ve had tremendous support from many of the schools and colleges and administrative units. They’ve really helped us pull together an exciting and educational week.”

MSA representatives say they hope students, alumni, faculty members and staff will come together for the celebration.

Several events are scheduled on the Diag, starting with the Kick Off Carnival at 11 a.m. Tuesday featuring the band Kinetix. Festivities continue Wednesday with nearly a dozen student organizations dedicated to environmental issues displaying their efforts and promoting this year’s theme to Go Blue — Live Green. Thursday is Environmental Philanthropy Day and students will challenge each other to live greener through a competitive recyclable art competition. The Homecoming Pep Rally takes place from 6-10 p.m. Friday.

An Energy Town Hall lecture by T. Boone Pickens is scheduled for 5p.m. Wednesday at the Power Center, where he will discuss the Pickens Energy Plan and take questions from the audience. Free tickets for the event are available at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, with a limit of two per person.
