EMU partners with WCC for nursing program

Easter Michigan University will partner with Washtenaw Community College for a special nursing program. Students will earn an associate’s degree in applied nursing from WCC and take State Board of Nursing exams to become a registered nurse, then earn their Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from EMU. WCC’s goal is to accept between 24-36 students per year to increase the number of EMU students in its program.

MSU receives $2.1M NIH grant

Michigan State University has received a $2.1 million research grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant will fund research that is testing at-home, therapeutic approaches to cancer care. Being compared are the benefits of reflexology and meditation when given by a friend or family member, and what best suits the patient.

UC-Berkeley celebrates $112M art center opening

The new Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive is set to open at the University of California Berkeley. The $112 million project is an 83,000 square foot visual arts center, which houses exhibition galleries, two film theaters, a performance venue, a cafe, art and film study centers, and an outdoor theater for public screenings. The center is located in a former UC Berkeley printing plant.

UCLA establishes Herb Alpert School of Music

The University of California-Los Angeles recently approved the establishment of the Herb Alpert School of Music. The school was created in 2007 with a $30 million gift from the Herb Alpert foundation and previously administered by the School of Arts and Architecture. It will now function as a separate unit. The school has approximately 450 undergraduate and graduate students and offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees though the music, ethnomusicology and musicology departments.

Harvard receives $28M grant for intelligence research

The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, funded by the U.S. federal government, have awarded more than $28 million to Harvard University’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Center for Brain Science, and Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. The grant will fund the research and development of computer systems that can interpret, analyze and learn information as successfully as humans.
