GEO contract negotiations continue

Although negotiations between the University and the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) on a new contract for graduate student instructors continued at press time, GEO has announced that it is considering a two-day work stoppage March 25 and 26.

Kelly Cunningham, director of public affairs and media relations, says that a work stoppage would seriously disrupt the University’s educational efforts, and in the end would harm U-M’s undergraduate students.

“The University does not believe a walkout is appropriate, nor is it necessary in order for GEO to arrive at a fair contract. It is expected that classes will be held as scheduled and that people will teach at the assigned times and locations,” she says.

A University bargaining team made up of faculty from LSA, the College of Engineering and the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, along with senior staff from LSA and Academic Human Resources, has met with the GEO bargaining team since early December. The previous contract was due to expire March 1; however, GEO agreed to extend the contract through March 24.

Negotiations have continued and are scheduled this week. Tentative agreements have been reached on eight contract articles and the teams have made significant progress in many important areas. A number of issues are still unresolved, however, including compensation, benefits, child care and tuition waiver.
