Flint will have new area code Dec. 1

On Dec. 1, some areas in Southeast Michigan, including the U-M-Flint campus, will begin to use a new area code. The 810 area code will be in effect for most of Genesee, Lapeer, Sanilac, St. Clair, Oakland and Macomb counties, and for portions of Wash-tenaw, Livingston, Shiawassee, Saginaw and Wayne counties.

Areas that have been in the 313 area code district will still be reachable under that area code until August 10, 1994. However, Information Technology Division consultants urge Univer-sity personnel who have programmed voice lines, data lines or fax machines to reprogram as soon as possible.

The Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses remain in the 313 area. Callers to the Flint campus will need to dial 9-1-810 before the seven-digit telephone number.

Ameritech says that the additional area code is necessary because of the dramatic increase in the use of fax machines, pagers, cellular phones and computer modems.

Ameritech also notes that there will be no additional charges as a result of the new area code. If a call was local before the change, it will still be local even though it may be to a different area code.

For information about the new area code, call Ameritech at 1-800-831-8989. For information on voice or data lines within the University, call ITD Network Systems at 763-2000.
