Film documentary explores Irish Rebellion 100 years later

The landmark documentary film “1916 The Irish Rebellion” will be presented in a public screening followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers at 6 p.m. Tuesday (April 5) in 100 Hutchins Hall.

Narrated by Liam Neeson, the film commemorates the centennial of the uprising. The University of Michigan screening is the first stop on a multi-campus tour. It is to be broadcast on Irish RTE Television and American and Canadian public television stations this spring.

The panel will include:

• Christopher B. Fox, director, Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies, University of Notre Dame, and producer of “The 1916 Irish Rebellion.”

• Briona Nic Dhiarmada, Thomas J. & Kathleen O’Donnell Chair of Irish Language and Literature, University of Notre Dame, writer and producer of the film.

• Thomas Bartlett, professor emeritus, University of Aberdeen.

The program is free and open to the public. It is presented in partnership with the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame. The event is made possible by a contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.
