Annual UMHS exhibit honors employee artists

Each year Gifts of Art presents an exhibition of the artwork of U-M Health System employees and volunteers to celebrate the talent and artistic accomplishments of UMHS faculty and staff.

The annual Employee Art Exhibition is displayed from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. through Aug. 18 in the Taubman Lobby South Gallery. There are 108 submissions to this year’s show.

This year’s exhibit was juried by quilt artist Garland Lewis and her husband Bill Lewis, professor emeritus in the School of Art & Design.

Best in Category winners are: painting, Joyce Tinkham; drawing and pastel, Maria Thomas; collage and mixed media, Brenda Miller; black and white photography, Keith Matz; color photography, Samuel Ritter; fiber arts, Paula Bryanch; jewelry, Debra Omans; ceramic and glasswork, Susan Adams; and sculpture and assemblage, Brenda Miller.

The top two honors were the People’s Choice Award, presented to Matthew Cook, and Best in Show, presented to Jianming Xiang.

Engineer on upcoming Nova scienceNOW

Nova scienceNOW, a Public Broadcasting Service newsmagazine, will feature a U-M engineer’s work in a segment called “Smart Bridges.” Assistant Professor Jerome Lynch discusses his work developing sensing skins that could detect cracks and corrosion earlier on bridges and other structures. Lynch is in the departments of civil and environmental engineering and electrical engineering, and computer science. Nova scienceNOW airs on PBS at 9 p.m. July 16.
