Disparities in dental care topic of health science talk

Dawley will discuss new ways of exploring and addressing dental health disparities. Her talk is sponsored by the School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, School of Social Work, College of Pharmacy and the U-M Hospitals & Health Care Centers. She will speak at 11:45 a.m. Jan. 19 in the Dow Auditorium, Towsley Center, U-M Hospital.

In her role as MDA president, Dawley plans to focus on access to care, how oral health care may fit into any potential national health care program, and how to encourage dentists to take a proactive role in local and national policy decisions by developing relationships with legislators.

Dawley, the first female president of the MDA, is a fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, American College of Dentists and the Academy of Dentistry International. She holds an undergraduate degree in English Literature from U-M and earned her D.D.S. degree from the School of Dentistry in 1980.

Prior to becoming MDA president, she served as MDA president-elect, vice president, three years as secretary and three years as a trustee representing the 18th District.

Dawley also has been an active member and leader within the Detroit District Dental Society, serving as the society’s president in 2000.
