The University of Chicago; University of California, Berkeley; Northwestern University; and the U-M have been drawn together under a $700,000 umbrella provided by Ameritech Foundation. The funds will be used to create a university consortium that will analyze regional, national and international public telecommunication policies.
Douglas E. Van Houweling, vice provost for information technology, will chair the consortium.
“The consortium offers society the best and brightest minds focusing on one of the most important issues of our lifetime—information superhighways,” Van Houweling says. “We are pleased to be one of the primary participants.”
The consortium, believed to be the first of its kind in the country, will help ensure that advanced telecommunications and information services are available to all Americans, following the national agenda outlined by President Bill Clinton.
